Whatever happened to transposing the last chorus in a song up a semi-tone or a 5th? That was probably one of my favorite trends of late 90s-early 2000s pop music.

Out of curiosity, I tried swinging a badminton racquet with my left hand in order to gain some perspective on what my students might be going through when trying to follow my instructions. Christ, badminton mechanics are hard to learn...

Friend: Come dance with me! Me: I don't like dancing. Friend: No guy likes dancing. Me: Then why would you think I'd join you?
People confuse me sometimes. Other times, they disgust me. It's generally one or the other.

For those of you who read this blog (a dwindling number, I'm sure, due to my lack of posting of late), I will be M.I.A. until the end of next week, i.e. May long weekend.

Spent the weekend with a group of students down in Cold Lake for a tournament. Many bumps in the road along the way (obviously), what with me not knowing what I was doing. The moment that I think I'll remember most, though, was the bus ride back.
Now, Cold Lake is 6 hours away from Fort McMurray. Needless to say, it was a long journey. However, during the latter half of the trip, I got to do something I haven't done in a long time - sit down with a group of academic students and have an intellectual conversation with them. You know, teaching applied kids all year, I think I kinda forgot that my favorite part of teaching was getting to talk to students about things like finding meaning and finding happiness and what they want to do in the world.
Applied students aren't inherently bad kids. They aren't, however, intellectuals. And on the bus bus ride, I had a chance to sit down with a group of grade 11-12, athletic, academic students, and ask them about things like what they want to do in life or why they want to go to university or why they think there's such a low turnout for young voters. I remember doing this stuff and injecting these discussions into my lessons during prac all the time (most of my courses during prac were academic/university-level) and that was why I loved teaching. This was the first time during this entire year that I got to do something like that.
At the end of the day, I'm an intellectual elitist. There's really no getting away from that. And until I get to a point where I have at least one class per semester that is intellectually stimulating, teaching will only ever be my job, not my life.

In other news, while I am a little behind on music news (hence not finding out about this until now), I would like to report that I am highly disappointed that Abbey Braden stopped hosting the Hype Machine radio show as of this past February. I don't know everyone's reason for listening to the Hype Machine radio (I imagine for the sake of new music), but half of the reason why I even tuned in at all was to hear Abbey Braden talk! Seriously, her voice is hella seductive.
